A pH meter or pH meter is a laboratory equipment used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, that is, it is an instrument whose function is to measure the pH level of liquids through glass plates, and thus way to accurately obtain an analysis on these fluids. The information provided by this laboratory device expresses the degree of acidity of an acid or a base in terms of the activity of hydrogen ions.
How is a pH meter made?
A pH meter is commonly made up of an amplifier and two electrodes, a pH measurement electrode, and a reference electrode. The reference electrode has a known, constant and stable potential. In the design of the pH meter we find structures similar to rods, commonly made of glass.
The electrode that measures pH is a glass bulb sensitive to hydrogen ions, with an output in millivolts that varies with changes in the relative concentration of hydrogen ions inside and outside the bulb. The reference electrode output does not change with the activity of hydrogen ions.
pH meter operation
pH meters measure the voltage levels between two electrodes, and display the result converted into a pH value that corresponds to the liquid found in the liquid being analyzed.
You should know that the operation of a pH meter is carried out through an electrochemical cell mechanism, where the H+ in the chemical reaction allow to determine their concentration in solution. When determining the pH with a pH meter, a reference electrode and a measurement electrode are used, which is sensitive to the analytes.
A pH meter works as a high impedance amplifier that accurately measures minimum electrode voltages and displays the results directly in pH units on an analog or digital display. In some cases, the voltages can also be interpreted for special applications or use with ion selective or oxidation/reduction potential electrodes.
