Operating tables are specialized operating tables used in operating rooms to position the patient during a surgical procedure, facilitating patient positioning during the various surgical procedures and allowing the surgeon good access to the surgical field.
These teams have a design and structure that allows the surgeon to perform the necessary surgical maneuvers to obtain a successful surgical intervention and a faster and smoother workflow. Operating tables are extremely useful elements within the operating room, as they serve the function of facilitating the surgical approach, placing the patient in the best position in relation to the surgeon.
How is an operating table made?
An operating table has a main platform, on which the patient can sit or lie down as needed, and a central base that allows adjustment of the table height and tilt.
The standard operating table has postural controls so that it can be manipulated, flexed, or extended to the desired position. Some tables have a metal crossbar or body elevator between the two upper sections that can be raised for gallbladder or kidney operations.
Sorting of operating tables
Operating desks are classified into universal operating desks and special operations desks, which in turn are classified into different models, according to the medical specialty for which it is used. Universal operating tables are used for general, digestive and minor surgery. They are teams that adapt to most cardiovascular, bladder, cosmetic surgery, among others. Special operations desks are used for one or more medical specialties and are characterized by their special configuration and accessories.
There is another classification, in which we find the general surgery tables who have a fixed height that comes in contact with the ground and two crosses that are regulated as needed, the orthopedic tables that are lower than the general surgery tables, which allows it to be more suitable for operations of bones and joints, in addition to enjoying greater stability so that surgeons can use stronger tools, and the tables of radiolucent images, manufactured to allow X-rays and other tools and equipment used in obtaining images to pass through the surface of the table allowing an easier capture of the images.
Types of operating tables
They are used for general, gastrointestinal, and minor surgery. They are very versatile and adaptable to most interventions such as cardiovascular, bladder, cosmetic surgery, among others. In this category we find several models:
- Surgical table JT-1: Used in head, neck, abdomen, chest, leg, general surgery as well as urologic surgery.
- Surgical table JT-2A: Used in general surgery and in specialized surgical procedures. They have a special board, laminated with high pressure that allows a radiological examination.
- Surgical table DT-12B: It serves as a multi-purpose table, for abdominal and thoracic surgeries, gynecological and obstetrical surgeries, brain surgery among others.
Special operating tables
- Gynecological operating tables: Allow a sitting or recumbent position, with Göpel leg rests. They’re ideal for the patient in labor. They are usually composed of two separate tables, one for the body and one for the legs.
- Orthopedic operating tables: Leg rests and traction frames are usually available. They have been manufactured to facilitate intervention and maneuverability and allow the surgeon to easily displace the patient.
- Ophthalmologic operating tables: These are convertible tables with a head rest specific for patient positioning.
