The heating blanket is a laboratory equipment used mainly in chemistry and biology laboratories, whose main function is to apply heat, evenly, to several containers with samples inside. This equipment is designed for use with difficult to position flasks and funnels and offers an alternative to thermoregulated baths.
It is considered one of the best known and safest methods for heating a reaction mixture. Most of them are hemispherical in design and come in a variety of sizes to accommodate various shapes.
Warming blanket structure
Each heating blanket is equipped with a flexible and insulated heating device, which allows the containers to be positioned directly on them, without, those made of glass, running the risk of breaking. Even so, not all of these equipment have temperature or power control, which must be done with external equipment.
The main use of heating blankets is to heat organic liquids, which need to go through a process of boiling, evaporation, distillation or extraction. It is usual for organic liquids to explode when in contact with heat or, failing that, to release toxic vapors, which can also be flammable. The heating blanket provides safety for the laboratory worker, since its heating system is closed, thus avoiding these risks caused by open flames.
Some types of heating blanket can be in rigid materials or fabrics. They can agitate samples, have or do not have an adjustable temperature controller, provide a limited heating time, distribute heat without creating condensed water, and can be safely and flameless heated up to 100 ° C.
Types of warming blankets
Heating Blanket with Integrated Temperature Control: This blanket heats and controls the temperature with its infinite range control and maintains a stable temperature. Heats up to 450 ° C. The interior is made of fiberglass cloth and the exterior has an aluminum shell. This blanket can be used on a magnetic stirrer without problems and can be adapted to a digital controller.
Magnetic Stirring Heating Blanket: This magnetic stirring blanket heats and controls the temperature with its infinite range control and maintains a stable temperature. Heats up to 450 ° C. With its continuous use motor, it regulates the speed so that it is stable. The interior is made of fiberglass cloth and the exterior has an aluminum shell, with metal protection and integrated magnetic stirring for spherical flasks.
Multiple heating blanket: This blanket is used to heat spherical flasks delicately and evenly, it can be used for soxhelt extractor, for refluxing and distillation. It is manufactured with an aluminum cover and a steel cabinet with an epoxy-polyester coating. The heater is made of fiberglass with chrome-nickel resistance. It has independent infinite range temperature control for each heater. The equipment is presented in three dimensions of flasks for 250 ml., 500 ml. and 1000 ml. and is manufactured for 4 or 6 units. It is also manufactured in magnetic stirring, with a continuous use motor and neodymium magnets.
Spherical bottom cylindrical reactor blanket: This blanket is generally made with a ceramic fiber heater and chrome-nickel resistance. It has an infinite range temperature control that allows to regulate a stable temperature; its shape allows the heating of cylindrical reactors with a spherical bottom.
