What is the pharadic effect?

The pharadic effect consists of neuromuscular stimulation when frequencies are applied below 100,000 Hz, which can generate an electric shock in the patient and become life-threatening. This occurs because the low or medium frequency alternating current causes stimulation in muscles and nerves, which can cause tetany, ventricular fibrillation, extrasystoles and even death.

The maximum effect or stimulation is achieved when the current is about 100,000 Hz and it is reduced as the frequency increases, as high frequencies lose the harmful effect.

What is electrosurgery?

Electrosurgery is the application of electrical current, through radiofrequency, on a biological tissue, to obtain a desired clinical effect. This technique has multiple benefits among which the least bleeding, less surgical time, and a more effective asepsis stand out.

It uses the so-called electrosurgical units or electrosurgical units, which base their operation on the application of high frequency alternating current on a biological tissue, in order to produce an effect that generates thermal energy and that carries out the following surgical effects depending on the achieved temperature: heating, retraction, reduction of enzyme activity, white coagulation, drying, cutting, flushing.

What is an electrosurgical unit?

An electrosurgical unit is a medical unit capable of transforming electrical energy into heat in order to cut or coagulate tissues and cauterize them at the same time, for this purpose it uses currents that develop in frequencies above 200,000 Hz. This equipment is currently widely used in many medical specialties such as plastic surgery, obstetrics, dentistry, orthopedics, dermatology and veterinary.

In other words, this device is responsible for generating the high frequency alternative energy used in electrosurgery from low frequency electrical currents, with the clear objective of achieving a thermal effect on the tissue being treated. These units are able to cut and cauterize fabrics quickly and with very little thermal damage and providing considerable time saving. It also provides effective asepsis, reducing the likelihood of transmission of infections from diseased tissues to healthy tissues. As well as, it also reduces bleeding from tissues.

How does an electrosurgical unit work?

The electrosurgical unit uses high frequency electrical energy to generate heat, with the aim of coagulating or cutting tissues of biological origin. To do this, it circulates currents above 200,000 Hz up to 3 GHz, using an electric generator through two electrodes applied to the body; to produce controllable heat at the applied site, with which electrosection or electrocoagulation of tissue is caused, depending on the case.

The electroscalpel generates a thermal effect produced by the high frequency alternating current used by the instrument, avoiding the faradic effect, since it uses current with frequencies above 200,000 Hz. Depending on the type of circuit it can produce two types of energy: monopolar energy and bipolar energy.
