Ion Meter

Today's ion meters are based on the ion-selective electrode technique. These are measuring instruments that have a sensitive membrane capable of measuring ionic activities. That is, they measure the concentration of a given ion in a solution using both a sensing electrode and a reference electrode.

The methodology used by ion meters with selective ion electrodes is ion exchange, which measures the potential difference produced by the contact of the electrode with the ion being analyzed.

To carry out the ion measurement, the ion selective electrodes must come into contact with a certain ion present in the solution. Since the main concern of this measurement is the concentration, and not the activity of the ions in the solution, many times salts are used that increase the ionic strength to facilitate the relationship between the potential of the electrode and the concentration.

Types of Laboratory Ion Meter a Laboratory May Need

  • Measurement of calcium in water: this helps consumers to accurately understand their calcium intake.
  • Determination of potassium in sea water
  • Measurement of water salinity: This is of great importance, as aquatic organisms, livestock and crops thrive at different levels of salinity.
  • Determination of sodium concentration in food: allows understanding and limiting salt intake and reducing health risks.
  • Measurement of the sodium value in canned food: due to the concern about the high concentration of sodium it is relevant, since excess sodium can cause high blood pressure and hypertension.

Ion meter in operation

Measurement of ion concentration or specific ion measurements via an ion meter can be performed on a wide variety of samples such as: water, food, beverages, pharmaceuticals and also samples of biological origin. The operation of an ion meter occurs by means of selective ion electrodes (SIIs) and measuring devices that have a sensitive membrane capable of measuring ion activity. These measure the concentration of ion determined in a solution using a sensor electrode and a reference electrode.

They work, as we mentioned earlier through ion exchange, where you measure the potential difference that is generated when the electrode comes in contact with the ion being studied.
